“Nosferatu” Director Watches “Home Alone”

Robert Eggers has only ever directed R-rated feature films, but one of his personal favorites is a family-friendly classic. And, like many fans, it’s a movie he watches at least once a year, probably around the Christmas holiday season.

Per Konbini, Eggers shared his thoughts on the iconic 1990 movie Home Alone. The film was directed by Chris Columbus, who also served as a producer on Eggers’ new Nosferatu movie. While Eggers noted that Columbus has been his “mentor” since his first feature film, his appreciation for the filmmaker’s work goes much back to Home Alone. Eggers called the Macaulay Culkin-led classic a “masterpiece,” stressing how big a fan he is of the film.

“I also watch this once a year,” Eggers said of Home Alone. “Chris Columbus has been a mentor to me since The Witch. Seems weird, I know it, but he is incredible, and he was the main creative producer on Nosferatu, and he was such an advocate. I think it was such a gift to have one of the masters of orthodox Hollywood storytelling be on set every single day.”

Eggers also shared how Columbus was very involved with the creative process of Nosferatu, down to making sure the storyboards accurately reflected the major moments from the script. These were suggestions given to help Eggers “make the best Robert Eggers movie with the most clarity as possible.” Eggers added, “I just couldn’t have had a better, more inspiring collaboration with a producer than I have with Chris Columbus.”

Circling back to Home Alone, Eggers continued, “I also think that this is a masterpiece. It’s a timeless movie. It is impeccably photographed, you know, unlike a lot of movies in this kind of genre. It’s not overshot. It is a really well-crafted film as well.”

Timeless movie

Written by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus, Home Alone starred Macaulay Culkin as an eight-year-old boy home alone on Christmas Eve, where he fends off two burglars (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern) using an array of creative, homemade traps. John Heard, Catherine O’Hara, Devin Ratray, Kieran Culkin, John Candy, and Roberts Blossom also starred. The film spawned several sequels, though Culkin only returned for the first sequel, 1992’s Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which was also written by Hughes and directed by Columbus.
