The Ultimate PR Lifeline
An expert has suggested that Meghan Markle may be seeking a royal “rebranding” due to her series of unsuccessful ventures since departing from the British royal family in early 2020. Sir Clive Alderton, King Charles III’s private secretary who has long been viewed as a critic of Prince Harry and Meghan, may be approaching retirement.
Author Tina Brown believes this development could pave the way for a reconciliation between Charles and Harry. Brown, the former Editor-in-Chief of Vanity Fair, also suggested that “The Crown needs Harry.” She noted that this shift could potentially be advantageous for the Duchess of Sussex as well, stating, “This could serve as a significant image boost for Meghan, as she must now realize that the tedious responsibilities of lesser royalty are far less burdensome than facing a series of failed rebranding efforts.”
California is Not Enough
The launch of the California Duchess’ highly publicized American Rivera Orchard brand in March was a quick disappointment, sparking speculation that she might be trying to return to the royal lifestyle she previously rejected. However, conflicting reports indicate that Meghan is unlikely to go back to Britain, as she wouldn’t want to pay respect to Kate, the Princess of Wales.
Royal author Andrew Morton remarked, “What, have Meghan Markle curtsy to Kate Middleton? I don’t think so. I don’t see that happening. They have their own lives in California.” He further emphasized that Meghan and Harry are settled in California, with their own distinct social circles, influence, and business ventures.
New Royal PR Role
While Kate holds a higher position than Meghan in the royal hierarchy, she is only required to curtsy to her sister-in-law if Prince William is present. For royal spouses who are not born into royalty, their rank derives from their husband’s position in the monarchy. William is the highest-ranking British royal after his father, Charles III, and stepmother, Queen Camilla.
Once William becomes king, Kate will instantly become his Queen Consort, and Meghan would then need to curtsy to her regardless of William’s presence. A “majesty” outranks a “royal highness,” as only a King or Queen is addressed as His/Her Majesty. This information comes amid reports that the Duchess of Sussex has not joined her husband on recent trips to NYC, London, and Africa, fueling rumors that they are pursuing separate careers.
Meghan has reportedly not returned to the UK since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022, although she did speak with her father-in-law via video for his 75th birthday in November 2023. While many royal experts deem a reunion of the Sussexes unlikely, a handful still hold out hope that the celebrity royals from California might someday return to the monarchy.
